Remember Remember the Fifth of November

Maybe John Boehner should loan that copy of the Constitution he was waiving around to Senator Roland Burris. It seems he’s bee using the White House approved version that seems to include some little bit about the government providing for the health of the people. It doesn’t. Nor does it support any kind of mandate stating that the people can be obligated to purchase a good or service by the government. No, it is not like auto insurance no matter how many verbal hoops you jump through to make it sound like it is.
Under state law, we have every one required to have automobile insurance. Now, think about that. And so under this here, we’re providing in the legislation where every one would be able to acquire health insurance. If they don’t get it, then that would–certainly they’re trying to provide some type of a provision for them in case they’re sick so that they will be covered and they won’t be a burden on the system. So, that’s the same thing proportionally to automobile insurance. I mean, it’s comparable.
Nope. Not comparable at all. If you don’t drive, you don’t have to buy auto insurance. And I love the little flip there about how people are required to buy automobile insurance but they are trying to make it so everyone can aquire health insurance. By forcing them to do so. Isn’t that sweet of them?
And I’m not entirely sure what he’s trying to say here. I think he got caught in something and can’t find his way back out.
Before we get into all of that, just rest assured, we need health insurance for every one that’s insured. We need health insurance where it’s affordable. We need health insurance that can be–that can cost affordable for all the insured and that the insurance companies will not be making excessive profits. That’s what we’re talking about. Okay? All right?
Um, everyone that’s insured has health insurance already. Surely he’s not implying that he wants everyone on the government plan and not just those currently uninsured. I thought the approved line was that if you like your coverage, you can keep it. Oh there it is!
What is happening is, is that the public will still have the options of going to an insurance company and what we’re saying is that we want the public to have a choice to get health insurance. So, in terms of what we have now, if you’ve got your insurance with a private provider–a private doctor–you can keep your private provider. We’re dealing with those persons who are either not able to get employment–insurance through their employer–or who can’t get insurance through, or if they’re small business, they can get insurance through their small business through an option arrangement. But there wouldn’t be any type of a–Well, in terms of a requirement for individuals, we’re hoping that everyone within–will receive insurance. We’ve got the 48 million people who are without it
It’s enough to make your head spin.
Meanwhile, the Republicans have presented a bill that will save money and make premiums lower for private citizens.

One minor nit to pick, Jennifer. The Constitution doesn’t say that the individual states cannot make their own mandates, which in theory could extend to insurance. This is exactly how they mandate auto insurance, and how Massachusetts mandates health coverage. The big difference between the states and the Federales is, quite simply, that you can leave a state at will. If Wyoming implements a policy that I find to be unacceptable, I have the option to either attempt to change that policy, or leave Wyoming for a place I find more amenable. (Not gonna happen, I love it here, and can’t imagine the fathers of this state implementing any policy that would offend me to the point of leaving.) It is much more difficult for me to find a new nation to live in, if the .gov implements such egregious policies on a federal level.

You’re right Loki. I didn’t point out that states can have that sort of mandate. The Feds can’t. It was designed that way on purpose.
