That is how Sotomayor responded to a question on the Heller decision.  You know, I have a nephew with a criminal record of stealing cars and I have friends that voted for Dear Reader.  That doesn’t mean I endorse or even empathize with either.  I’m certainly not going to work to see that these types of activities continue.  Sure I still love my nephew and friends*, but I continually hope that they will see the error in their ways.

I have friends and family that have done all sorts of things I wish they wouldn’t.  Some things I really wish they couldn’t.  I mean, some of them wear Crocs in public!  I may agree with the right to bare arms, but I will never support the right to spongy footwear!

And exactly what was Dick Heller hunting in DC anyway?  Maybe she should ask her friends about that.  There are some very major differences between hunting and self defense.  For one, there is no criminal season or bad guy bag limits.  And you don’t have to wait for a deer to break into your house before you shoot them.  And you shouldn’t eat, wear, or make trophies out of your self defense kills.  Tempting as it may be to mount the heads of many politicians on your mantle, you just can’t do that.

What was she trying to demonstrate here?  Will the wise latina have empathy for gun owners and hunters because of her relational experiences?  Or maybe I’m supposed to react with, “OMG!  Really?!?  Me too.  Well not godchildren because I don’t have any, but my own offspring is a member of the NRA.  I signed him up myself.”  Somehow, I don’t think that’s what she was going for.
